English Placement

UMHB offers three entry level English courses. These courses are:

  • ENGL 1321 (Rhetoric and Composition I)
  • ENGL 0130 (Integrated Literacy)
  • ENGL 0330 (Skillful Literacy)

A student's SAT or ACT score (including the essay) determines what English a student will be placed into at Cru Camp. UMHB will use both new and old versions of the SAT and ACT to determine placement.

Students must report an essay score on either the ACT or SAT in order to place into ENGL 1321- Rhetoric and Composition 1.

ACT

In order to go into ENGL 1321, a student must score a 19 or higher on both the writing and reading portions of the ACT or have a19 or higher average on the reading and English sections. If a student’s reading and English average falls between a 17-18  then the student will place into ENGL 1321 and the additional 1-hour support course ENGL 0130. If a student's average on the reading and English portions is a 16 or below, then the student will begin English in ENGL 0330, our 3-hour developmental English course.

Old SAT
If a student scores a 960 or higher on the combined verbal and writing portions, then they will be placed into ENGL 1321. If a student scores between a 920-959 on the combined verbal and writing portions, then they will place into ENGL 1321 and the additional 1-hour support course ENGL 0130. If a student scores below a 920 combined score on verbal and writing, then the student will begin English in ENGL 0330, our 3-hour developmental English course.

New SAT
If a student scores a 21 or higher on the essay, then they will place into ENGL 1321. If a student's EBRW score is above a 540, then they will place into ENGL 1321. If the student scores between 500-539 on the EBRW (but does not meet the requirements for ENGL 1321), then the student will be placed into ENGL 1321 and the additional 1-hour support course ENGL 0130. If a student scores below a 500 on EBRW, then the student will begin English in ENGL 0330, our 3-hour developmental English course.

If your ACT or SAT scores do not meet the requirements for entry into ENGL 1321, then we encourage you to take a placement test to test out of developmental English, and into ENGL 1321. If you did not complete the essay portion of the ACT or SAT, then you are required to take the essay portion of the Accuplacer to determine English placement. We recommend taking the Accuplacer Prior to Cru Camp.

The minimum placement scores are listed in the below chart.

Math Placement

All degrees at UMHB require either MATH 1304 (Quantitative Reasoning) or MATH 1306 (College Algebra) or higher.  MATH 1304 has no prerequisites or required SAT/ACT scores.

To place into MATH 1306, a student must score a 22 or higher on the ACT math, a 500 or higher on the Old SAT math, or a 530 or higher on the New SAT math.  If a student's degree requires MATH 1306, and they do not meet the minimum standards, then the student can choose to take a placement challenge test, or begin with MATH 1300 (Math Review).

A student can enroll directly into MATH 1320 (Pre Calculus) with a SAT Math score of a 570 or higher or an ACT score of 24 or higher.

Learn which Math courses your major will require.

Note: If a student scores a 28 or higher on the ACT math, or a 650 or higher on the New SAT Math, then they will recieve credit for MATH 1306.

Although UMHB currently uses Accuplacer to determine placement in Mathematics, other placement tests are acceptable. The table below gives the scores required to place out of MATH 1300 and into MATH 1306.
